BG5 Nutrition & Fitness
BG-5 is an after-school youth wellness program designed to educate children, ages eight to 13, about the benefits of choosing a healthy lifestyle. This exciting 24-week series works to instill lifelong healthy habits in children and young adults.
The program’s curriculum emphasizes healthy values, attitudes and food choices, coupled with physical exercise, to build strong bodies. Our nutrition classes teach people how to make healthier eating choices, and offer easy recipes that provide tasty, alternative options. We foster a connection between the food we eat and the earth on which it grows.
Children engage in “Plant to Plate” organic gardening, interactive games, engaging health activities, fun fitness exercises, and take-home projects that are shared with parents and family members, reinforcing what was learned.
Collaborating with other non-profits adds to the effectiveness of the BG-5 program. For example, A Better World coordinates with the American Heart Association on their “Hip Hop for Heart Program,” keeping children active and staying healthy.
Capacity Building
The BG-5 program is steadily gaining momentum through capacity building. A Better World teaches after-school staff to incorporate nutritional training and physical activities with other extracurricular activities. Participating after-school programs receive free fitness equipment and the BG-5 curriculum to implement.Read about the Outcomes of the BG-5 Program.
