Ghana Micro Sun Bakeries Project

Developed by A Better World in 2000, this project was founded with the goal of alleviating poverty and enhancing the quality of life for women in Ghana.  Through the creation of a bakery business that utilizes solar ovens for cooking, the project established self-sustaining micro-enterprises, giving an economic boost to the region and the promise of a better future to its people.

The Ghana Soybean Utilization Project

In the Yendi District of the Northern Region of Ghana, the battle against poverty and malnutrition is ongoing.  To improve conditions and help increase food security, a sustainable rural development initiative was established in 2002.  The project, an NGO/private sector partnership, provided solutions through improved farming skills.  By empowering individuals and communities with the right training and resources, the project increased incomes and improved the quality of life for farmers and their families.  A Better World created a better future for over 225 families in the region.

Clean Water

Clean water is the lifeline of developing nations. The health and economic survival of rural communities is dependent on access to local clean water.

Health: The largest curable cause of illness and mortality is lack of access to clean water. Over 80% of the disease in developing countries is related to poor drinking water and sanitation (World Health Organization).

Economic: 40 billion-work hours per year are lost in Africa alone as a result of the time spent fetching water long distances – up to six hours per day (UNICEF).  Many children miss school because they must spend hours fetching water.  This significantly reduces the children’s chances for a more productive future.

A Better World is committed to providing long-term solutions through the development of new local access to clean water. In addition to drilling water wells, we also provide education on the treatment of unclean water, which helps us create essential changes for social well-being and community health.

How we Serve our Communities:

  • Increase access to potable water through the drilling of new water wells
  • Prevent and reduce disease associated with unclean water
  • Build village capacity through training, education and technical assistance

Current Initiatives:  Ghana, West Africa.
